Drop-Off Instructions!
As gardens have grown and a new school year begins, we invite everyone to support Edmonton Food Bank by donating garden produce and/or non perishables.
If you are able to contribute, a convent drop off location is available in Laurier Heights (13908 76 Ave) from Sept 7-8th. Boxes can be filled on the driveway.
All donations will be delivered to the Food Bank on September 9th.
Growing Goodness!
Imagine an initiative that both raises money and helps give fresh produce to Edmonton’s Food Bank… well this fantastic idea was hatched by three budding entrepreneurs who are only in grade 4 and you can be a part of it! As winners of the Girls Can contest, Sophie, Olivia, and Keira have started this community-focused project and they call it Growing Goodness!
How This Works:
These Grade 4 students are selling kits with vegetable seeds and a hand designed Growing Goodness garden sign for $10 each. You plant the seeds in your garden (we will have some instructions here shortly) and stick the original Growing Goodness sign next to the seeded area to remind you that you are helping others in our community. All proceeds from the kit sales are being donated to Edmonton’s Food Bank. At the end of the growing season, any harvested vegetables you can spare can be dropped off at a convenient neighborhood location for delivery to Edmonton’s Food Bank, or else can be delivered directly to their central depot.
Seed Kits:
Each seed kit is designed for either garden or container planting and all seeds are non-GMO and heirloom varieties. The seeds include:
Carrots - Nantes Coreless - carrots are about 8" long and can even be grown in a really deep container!
Zucchini - Dark Green - enough seeds for two large containers or two hills
Beets - Detroit Dark Red - both the roots (beets) and the leafy greens are edible!
Peas - Homesteader or Lincoln - bush style peas that are planted 2.5" inches apart, grow to about 30" tall, and don't need a trellis. These do great both in the garden or in a container.
Beans - Golden Wax Yellow or Pencil Pod Black Wax Yellow - bush style beans that are planted 3" apart, grow to about 30" tall, and don't need a trellis. These do great both in the garden or in a container!
