Getting Ready for Your Headshot

Here is some guidance to make your headshot session a successful one!

• If in doubt, dress up rather than down, unless you are intentionally looking for a "casual" appearance. This means suit and tie, or formal-looking blouses, etc. Make sure it's in good condition, and wrinkle-free.

• For a more casual look:

  • Even if you are going tie-free, still choose a shirt that has a stiffer collar so that it maintains a clean shape.

  • Do not wear an undershirt that is visible around the neck, or otherwise visible through your shirt.

• Wear fitted clothing if possible. Avoid anything ill-fitting or baggy by design.

• Avoid necklines that go very low, in case the image ends up getting cropped closer to the face for social media profiles etc. For similar reasons any necklaces etc. should hang closer to the neck for a cohesive look after it is cropped.

• Keep accessories simple and classic. Watches and jewelry should complement rather than dominate your look.

• Avoid large or bold patterns or textures, as well as conspicuous brand names. Solid colours are ideal, or a light patterning that isn’t distracting.

• For colours:

  • try to avoid clothing that "matches" your skin tone - specifically for the pieces that would be visible right against your skin, like your shirt or blouse. For darker skin choose a lighter piece to provide some contrast, and vice versa.

  • Generally, darker colors (black and navy blue) are thought of as more formal and authoritative, while lighter colours are considered more approachable and friendly
